I was on my way to a family photo shoot when I saw Alex reading in the sun. I knew I needed him for this batch of Humans Being.
I sat my props on the ground, with my big camera bag, and I carefully tied my helium balloons to them so they would not fly away. I sidled over and we chatted for 5 minutes before I rose from the warm grass and went back to my kit…. no balloons.
They weren’t in the air, they weren’t flying along the ground, and there was no mad clown dashing off with them.
‘Tis a mystery, and the sacrifice I made for this image!
“I just moved to Sydney from Hong Kong one month ago. I’m from New York but my partner and I were living in Hong Kong and running our own tailoring business and we decided to have a change. Now we’re trying to decide whether we open our own business again or pursue something else but for the moment I’m just enjoying the Sydney summer.”
“I beat John Newcombe at tennis a number of times. I was about 16 at the time and I carried on for a while but not to the heights that he reached.”
“I had meningitis when I was younger and by the time I got to the hospital 80% of my body had died. My limbs were all dying. Then with a huge amount of treatment they brought all of my flesh back to life and I am here. Apparently it was quite a big deal because they use me as a case study in universities.”
“My son was healthy and normal and at 6 months he started to decline. We went to about 4 specialists, a paediatrician and our GP consistently for about 6 months and no one believed that there was anything wrong. They said his sleeplessness, weight loss, crying and clinginess was normal. Finally we bumped into an early childhood nurse we’d seen when he was first born and she said she thought there was something wrong. She came to our house to observe us and within 5 minutes she confirmed that there was something very wrong and he was struggling to breathe. She called a doctor for us, and explained the situation and we ended up in emergency very quickly where he stayed for 2 weeks initially. He was diagnosed with a severe combined immune deficiency, only 20 cases are diagnosed in Australia per year. At 1 and 3 months he had a stem cell transplant from cord blood they found in The States.
Now, he’s fine. He’s my genetic miracle, and my second baby became my IVF miracle.”
