Share love, not herpes

cold sore treatment

If you do feel compelled to hide your cold sore with a paper bag, why not make it a pretty one?

I was having an argument with someone about cold sores recently. We were talking about how cold sores are acceptable and genital herpes carries a skanky stigma, and I was arguing that it’s the same thing.

Said argument over herpes virus simplex 1 and simplex 2 got fairly graphic as it was after a boozy dinner out and I have no filter.

The debate took place in the back of a taxi and my argument went like this –

If I have a cold sore on my mouth and I give someone a head job, they will contract my herpes simplex 1 on their penis, therefore my cold sore is now a genital affliction. If that penis shares the ‘cold sore’ with a vagina (or someone else’s penis, we’re equal opportunity around here) is it now simplex 1 or simplex 2?

Then if the third lucky recipient receives a blow job and the blower contracts a blister on the mouth from the blowee’s genitals it is now back to being a nice, tidy socially acceptable cold sore and nothing to be ashamed of.

The taxi driver was aghast at our discussion but he’ll probably think twice about blow jobs in future.

I got my first cold sore when I was 18. It was the size of Texas on my chin and it hurt like all get out and I felt like an absolute leper, but with cold sore treatment it healed without scarring, and now all of the these years later the herpes virus is a major indicator of my stress levels.

I need a combo of things to break out. Generally I need two or more of the following –

Drinking too much

Not managing stress

Not getting enough sleep

Also, crazy fear or grief will do it on it’s own.

Cold sores are uncomfortable and they can make you feel fugly but with up to 76% of the population carrying the herpes simplex virus worldwide they aren’t a big deal….. as long as you manage them properly.

I don’t think people talk about these uncomfortable and awkward subjects enough therefore not only does it carry a stigma, but people are unaware of how easy it is to spread.

They should teach my blower and blowee theory in schools.

cold sore treatment

I hope someone told these guys the theory.

It seems like common sense but kids aren’t taught it in these terms and suddenly a Simplex One cold sore is Simplex Pants on Fire with Weeping Blisters and they’re stuck with it for life.

Another thing people need more education on is herpes and babies. Newborns and cold sores especially.

Not everyone knows that if you have a cold sore and you kiss a newborn whose sweet, fresh, little immune system is still as pure as the driven snow, it can have catastrophic affects.

It can even kill them.

In November 2014 in a Mackay Hospital in Queensland, newborn Eloise Lampton contracted the virus from someone that was never pinpointed. A brush of a lip, or an unwashed hand and that sweet little baby died 24 days later from a secondary staph infection… but still herpes, folks. A simple cold sore.

You don’t even need to actually touch the blister to get it. It can be spread on cutlery, glasses, towels or tissues so really if you do have a cold sore you need to be responsible for not spreading it. It ain’t deadly – usually – and it ain’t a big deal but really, you don’t want to share that with your loved ones.

It isn’t curable but it is treatable with various products but there one particular product on the market that is having awesome results in nipping blisters in the bud before they turn into full blown sores.

Fixalip was originally formulated in a small Melbourne pharmacy and it had such great results that they decided to market it.

Instead of being full of pharmaceuticals, it’s simply a blend of alcohols and ether (kind of like a martini without the olives) that zaps the virus.

They sent me some to try and I waited and waited for a cold sore, but I haven’t had one for ages.

I’ve found a happy balance between drinking just the right amount, getting loads of sleep and managing my stress, but that Fixalip is sitting there and when I get that tingling feeling I’ll be whacking that on because anything that blasts those tingles and prevents me wanting to put a bag on my head is worth a shot.

Do you get cold sores? How do you treat them?

How much do they suck?

There are two species of Herpes simplex virus. There is Herpes simplex virus 1 and Herpes simplex virus 2. The numbers relate to the microorganism (virus) and not the anatomical region of infection. The majority of oral cold sores are caused by Herpes simplex virus 1 and the majority of genital infections are caused by Herpes simplex virus 2. You’re right they can cross over. The good news is that most people have subclinical infections and never experience primary infections which can be ghastly and in genital herpes require sitz baths and the like.

Thanks for low down, so to speak. Here’s to stopping the spread of ghastly primary infections. They sound like no fun whatsoever.

I really enjoyed my year of sexual health during my specialty training. As a specialist microbiologist, STIs are amongst my favourite infections.

Rather one has simplex 1 or 2, it is still herpes. The issue is oral is socially acceptable. You tell a potential partner you get cold sores and they are like, “Okay, no big deal”. You tell them, “Hey, I have genital herpes.” and they run for the hills. It’s ridiculous and ignorance on a mass scale. Thanks to the media. Commercials for cold sore medications should state that cold sores are oral herpes. Stop sugar coating it to make people with oral herpes socially acceptable and feel like they don’t have something to worry about. They can spread a virus that cannot be cured. That is a big deal. They can, like the author of the article stated, give a BJ or the like to a woman, and transmit the virus. Herpes is herpes and the public should be informed of the truth. But it seems that ignorance is the norm regurgitated over and over.

In the back of my mind, I spent my younger years fearing someone would infect my vagina in just this way. It never happened, thank you Jesus.
